McNary Band Placement Tests 2023-2024

9th-11th grade tests will be held during class sometime in May. 8th graders who wish to be considered for Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble can submit a video or play for Mrs. Hering during one of her visits in May.

When you forecast for classes:
8th graders forecast for "Band".
9th-11th graders forecast for your current band.
Current Wind Ensemble members forecast for Wind Ensemble and Advanced Symphony Orchestra (and/or Percussion)
After auditions, I will have your schedules changed to the appropriate band.

Your audition:

SCALES:

9th-11th graders: Plan to play the HS All City Scale sheet for this audition.
8th graders: no scales required unless you would like to be considered for a Wind Ensemble placement. For Wind Ensemble, please play a chromatic scale that demonstrates your lowest and highest registers.

ETUDE

If you want to try for a Wind Ensemble placement you should be able to play the entire audition etude.
Percussion should play the entire page for snare OR mallets. You may play a partial page for your second etude.
If you want to try for a Symphonic Band placement, play as much of the etude as you can play cleanly. You do not need to be able to play the entire page for a Symphonic Band placement, but it will help your fall chair placement if you can do so.
If you want a Concert Band placement, you do not need to play an audition.
