Fall Honor Band Opportunities (updated for 2024)
The PSU and Montana honor bands take registrations based on director nomination and there is no audition. Students in the McNary Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble perform at a level that would be appropriate for the PSU or Montana bands - if you would like to be nominated please send me a quick email indicating this. The third honor experience, WIBC, is an auditioned experience with several levels - see info below.
While we don't have booster scholarships for the fall honor bands, you may use your band account money to offset fees for these experiences.
PSU Honor Band. December 6 and 7 (not overnight). $100 cost to participate. Nominations are due October 11. Please note, that you can not participate in this honor band if you are in Jazz 1 or 2 because of the McKay Jazz Festival on December 7. Information for the PSU Honor Band can be found here.
University of Montana Honor Band: November 8-10, nominations are due September 27. Yes, this one is in Montana - but if you are considering the University of Montana as a potential college choice, this would be a great experience for you. You would be responsible for booking your own flight and hotel accommodations (info is on their webpage). Please note that you can also not participate in this honor band if you are in Jazz 1 or 2 because you will have a conflict with the fall jazz concert on November 8. Information for the UM Honor Band can be found here.
WIBC: November 22-25 in Seattle, audition recordings must be uploaded by October 11. Cost of participation is $290 plus the cost of housing (depending on the number of nights you stay and the number of roommates you have, the total cost of participation plus housing is $405-$610). WIBC is a wonderful band conference that includes an awesome honor band experience for high school students.
There is a recorded audition and it's the same music that our Symphonic Band works on for our Fall assessment. If you are in Wind Ensemble our Fall assessment is the Oregon All State audition material -- you are allowed to audition for WIBC with the Oregon All State material instead of the WIBC etudes - that way you are not preparing two different auditions at the same time.
If you decide to audition for WIBC, please note:
* You are responsible for recording and uploading your own audition.
* You are responsible for housing and transportation.
* All information can be found on the WIBC website here.
