McNary Band Placement Auditions
2025-2026

Submit your recordings by April 25

When  you forecast for classes:
8th graders forecast for " Concert Band".
9th-11th graders forecast for your current band.
Current Wind Ensemble members forecast for Wind Ensemble and Advanced Symphony Orchestra (and/or Percussion)
After auditions, I will have your schedules changed to the appropriate band.
If you desire a Wind Ensemble Placement - for current 8th - 11th graders
  1. All State chromatic scale at a tempo that is comfortable for you
  2. First All State etude at a tempo that is comfortable for you
  3. Percussionists: No scale. Please play the All State mallet (track 2) and snare (track 3) etudes.
  4. For anyone moving up to Wind Ensemble: sightreading and music literacy check

If you desire a Symphonic Band Placement
  1. For current 8th - 11th grader woodwind and brass players: The Wurm etude as fast as you can play it cleanly
  2. For current 8th - 11th graders: A chromatic scale that demonstrates your range (the lowest note you can play to the highest note you can play).
  3. 9th -11th Grade Percussionists: Play the Advanced Snare etude and the advanced mallet etude OR the Wurm etude on mallets.
  4. For anyone moving up to Symphonic Band: sightreading and music literacy check
  5. The Advanced Snare Etude and the 8th grade All City Scales. You will not need to play a mallet etude.

How to audition:
  1. Record your scale and etude and submit them via the submission button (audio or video)
  2. OR, schedule a time to play for Mrs. Hering in person.
  3. If you auditioned for All State this year and still have this recording, you may use that instead of recording new tracks.
  4. Submit the forms and recordings no later than April 25, 2025
  5. For those requesting a move up placement, Mrs. Hering will have you sightread and give you a music literacy check in early May. (8th graders, this will be done at your school during regular class time).

What will the sightreading and literacy check be like?
  1. Practice sightreading with Sightreadingfactory.com
  2. Literacy check will include:
    1. Reading notes in your own clef, including ledger lines.
    2. Writing counts for basic rhythms

Other requirements:
  1. Students placed in Wind Ensemble must meet OSAA Academic Eligibility requirements and have a good attendance record.
  2. Students placed in Symphonic Band must have a good attendance record.
